Pennsylvania’s rural interior has an unusual combination: sustained imaging demand and very little capacity to supervise it.
The state’s non-metropolitan counties skew considerably older than the national average, which drives steady demand for contrast-enhanced CT and MRI. That demand is served largely by small independent hospitals and single-site centers — facilities in the PA Wilds, the northern tier, and the western counties that operate outside the large Philadelphia and Pittsburgh systems and can’t share a supervising physician with a sister site.
So the need is high and the structure to meet it is thin. These aren’t low-volume facilities that could reasonably forgo contrast imaging; they serve populations that use it heavily, with staffing models built for a smaller caseload than they actually carry.
Philadelphia and Pittsburgh have the conventional cost question. The interior has a capability question.
Virtual contrast supervision supplies physician availability without requiring a system affiliation or a full-time hire.
ContrastConnect covers imaging centers across Greater Philadelphia, southwestern Pennsylvania, the Lehigh Valley, northeastern Pennsylvania, Central Pennsylvania, the Erie region, and the PA Wilds — including Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Allentown, Erie, Reading, Scranton, Bethlehem, Lancaster, Harrisburg, Altoona, York, Wilkes-Barre, State College, and Williamsport.
