Colorado's imaging market is split by geography in a way few states match. The Front Range corridor whichsupports a dense network of outpatient imaging facilities. These markets are competitive, high-volume, and growing.
Away from the Front Range, the picture changes sharply. Colorado's State Office of Rural Health reported in 2024 that essentially all rural and frontier counties face primary care shortages. Fifty-four of the state's 64 counties are designated health professional shortage areas. For imaging facilities in these communities, the Western Slope, the San Luis Valley, or the Eastern Plains, maintaining reliable physician supervision for contrast studies is one of the most persistent operational challenges they face.
Colorado has no state-specific legislation governing virtual contrast supervision beyond the federal CMS permanent rule effective January 1, 2026, which authorizes real-time audio-visual physician oversight as the equivalent of physical presence.
