In November 2024, the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services extended the use of remote contrast supervision and telecommunications through 2025, with the extension slated to expire December 31, 2025.
Part of this extension includes continuing the revised definition of “direct supervision” to include immediate availability via audio and video technology. The overarching goal of CMS being to improve utilization of healthcare resources, improve access to patient care, and reduce costs for the healthcare system without compromising patient safety.
Given that remote supervision is still in its infancy, CMS and ACR continue to evaluate their proposed guidelines and protocols to ensure alignment with industry needs and patient safety requirements. Staying current and up to date on published guidelines is paramount for imaging companies.
Imaging centers are required to abide by the requirements and guidelines set forth by certifying bodies, like the ACR. Part of the duty of imaging companies is to review the guidelines surrounding the use of remote supervision and to ensure that their staff is well-versed in these rules.
In addition, it is also good practice to check in on the accreditation support pages of the ACR to ensure that your clinic is current on the most recent set of guidelines regarding contrast supervision.
ContrastConnect exists to facilitate the responsible use of remote supervision to the highest degree of patient safety and utility for imaging companies.
