AB460 Heads to California Senate Health Committee Today

Today represents a meaningful step forward for outpatient imaging across California.

At 1:30 PM PT, Assembly Bill 460 (AB460) will be heard by the California Senate Health Committee. This legislation seeks to modernize the state’s supervision requirements for contrast-enhanced imaging by allowing real-time virtual supervision—a model that’s already proving to be safe, effective, and essential in addressing the growing demand for diagnostic imaging services.

At ContrastConnect, we’ve received several messages from customers today who are closely watching the vote, and for good reason. AB460 directly addresses the operational challenges that imaging centers face daily, especially when it comes to staffing and patient access. Allowing licensed physicians to provide remote oversight via secure audio/video technology means centers can extend hours, reduce wait times, and improve throughput, without compromising patient safety.

The bill’s language is carefully aligned with federal definitions of “direct supervision” as adopted by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). With virtual supervision already in use nationwide, California has an opportunity to align state policy with modern standards of care and support innovation in how outpatient imaging is delivered.

If passed, AB460 would not only support better operations for imaging centers but also increase access to timely diagnostic care, especially in rural or underserved areas where physician availability can be limited.

We’re proud to support this important legislation and grateful to the many customers, professional organizations, and advocates who continue to push for progress. We’ll be watching closely this afternoon and remain hopeful for a favorable vote.

Modern imaging deserves modern policy. AB460 is a step in the right direction.
